Take the lane!
When a traffic lane is too narrow to safely accommodate both a motor vehicle and bicycle,
the bicyclist needs to boldly go where no motorist wants you to go – to the center of the lane!
Otherwise, a motorist, with every intention of obeying the law, will try to pass by squeezing in between you and the center line. Spare them the mental anguish of making that decision and position yourself in the lane so they can’t possibly pass without crossing that sacred double yellow line. This truly is a bicyclist’s best defense until the road widens when motorist and bicyclist can safely share the same lane.
