Speck in your brother’s eye and the log in yours…

Being a bicyclist is hard. We’re more often than not rogue agents in an alien transportation infrastructure.
There just isn’t a nice fit in the midst of all that motor vehicle traffic. The result? Fingers fly and tongues flap. There are a lot of reasons for the tension between bicyclists and motorists: infrastructure design, ignorance of the law, distractions, lack of empathy, selfishness, inattention, etc. One reason for this tension that is often discounted among bicyclists is their own disregard of the law. Many motorists have a hard time respecting bicyclist’s outrage over motorists violating laws affecting bicyclists (ie..parking/stopping in a bike lane (Oregon)), when they see a bicyclist who just blew a stop light screaming at some motorist who is in a bike lane. If bicyclists want respect, then we need to behave in such a way that is worthy of it.
